Piles Treatment: Surgery and It’s Cost

Piles can be a rather troublesome and distressing clinical condition. Being fairly common, there has been a lot of research looking into the different ways of piles treatment.

This can range from simple home remedies to medical treatments and even complex surgical procedures.

While most cases of piles can be treated with conservative measures (home remedies and medical treatment), the moderate to severe cases of piles usually require some form of surgical intervention.

The issue, of course, with complex surgery, is cost.

The cost of piles surgery depends primarily on the type of surgery the doctor recommends and the patient opts for.

Surgeries that have been around for years can cost less while those that are more recent and more advanced can cost more.

However, it must be borne in mind that paying more for surgery does not necessarily mean that the surgical option is a better one.

In this article, we should take a look at the general costs of piles surgery in the United Kingdom, United States and in India.

Cost of Piles Surgery

In the United Kingdom, the National Health Service provides piles surgery to all taxpayers for free. This does not mean that it does not cost the hospital anything either.

On an average, a procedure such as a hemorrhoidectomy can cost around £800-£1000. The more recent advanced piles treatment such as hemorrhoid artery ligation (under Doppler guidance) can cost up to £3000 is performed in a private institution.

As is clearly evident, this is in no way cheap.

In the United States, hemorrhoid surgery is performed in hospitals if the patient is covered by medical insurance. Medical insurance will cover the costs accrued.

However if the patient does not have medical insurance, the surgical procedure itself can cost anywhere between $1000 to up to $2000. If one were to factor in the visits to the hospital for consultations etc, then the cost for this type of piles treatment would be significantly higher.

The procedure such as a simple traditional hemorrhoidectomy can cost up to $1200. More advanced procedures are a lot more expensive.

In India, the cost of hemorrhoid surgery varies between different hospitals especially because health care is primarily privatized. Of course, government hospitals do provide free treatment but these are usually reserved for patients with extremely low incomes or those below the poverty line.

In private hospitals, piles treatment surgeries can cost anywhere between Rs.5000 up to Rs.20,000. Costs can be a lot higher if treatments are required in multiple sittings.

Once again, taking into consideration the consultation costs plus prescription medication, the overall costs of piles treatment can be a lot higher and may not necessarily be affordable to many people.

Is It Possible To Avoid Surgery?

Every patient who suffers from piles does not necessarily require some form of surgical intervention.

Piles are classified into three main categories depending on how bad they appeared on clinical examination and how distressing they are to the patient.

Mild forms of hemorrhoids can be managed with over-the-counter medication or just a change in diet to a high-fiber one. Moderate and severe hemorrhoids can be managed by simple procedures such as sclerotherapy and rubber band ligation.

These piles treatments are safe and effective and if one were to continue to observe the required lifestyle modifications following these procedures, the chances of them developing piles again can be minimized significantly.

Unfortunately, some patients have a great degree of pain and are very distressed by piles to a point where it affects their quality of life tremendously.

Even though they have tried home remedies, lifestyle changes and medical pile treatment, they do not seem to get any sort of relief. In such patients, surgical treatment is inevitable and is the only way patients can feel better and regain their normal lifestyle.

Avoiding These Costs in Piles Treatment

Prevention is better than cure. The commonest reason for developing piles is constipation and excessive straining when attempting to open the bowels.

Eating a healthy diet that is rich in fiber and performing regular exercise allows normal bowel movements that are effortless and require minimal to no straining.

FruitsA diet rich in fibre should be one that consists of foods that are high in fiber or ispaghulla supplements. These bulk up the stools and promote easy passage.

Exercises have clearly been shown to maintain healthy bowel movements and prevent constipation. Simple exercises such as a brisk walk for 30 min a day or even a short jog is sufficient.

Unfortunately, despite all these measures, some patients are just more prone to developing piles. In such cases a visit to the doctor is warranted.

In addition to the above advice, sudden over-the-counter medications may be available to the patient that can help relieve symptoms.Costs of these can vary but it still remains cheaper than undergoing expensive surgery for piles treatment.

But it must be borne in mind that not everyone experiences the same degree of relief from these pile treatment and sometimes they have no choice but to undergo some form of surgical treatment to get relief.

Procedures such as rubber band ligation and sclerotherapy are a lot cheaper than surgical treatments such as a hemorrhoidectomy.

The advantage is that these can be carried out in an outpatient setting, are relatively painless and have minimal side-effects. Patients can go home the same day and just have observed a few precautions while the area heals.

These options must be discussed with the doctor as every patient is different and recurrence rates may be higher in one patient when compared to the other.

Finally, these days medical tourism seems to be catching on with patients flying to different countries to undergo simple surgeries.

One of the reasons why this happens is due to the waiting times and sometimes it’s just the cost. Flying to another country and undergoing the piles treatment procedure can sometimes be a lot cheaper but may not necessarily be the best way forward.

Any concerns should be discussed with your doctor before embarking on medical tourism for piles treatment.

Conclusion

Piles treatment through surgery can be expensive. Just a few simple measures can help prevent development of hemorrhoids and thus help one avoid the costs of undergoing regular consultations and surgical procedures.
